Christ the Lord Is Risen Again Shephard
This issue has been a sticking point between sabbatarians and the residuum of the Trunk of Christ for some fourth dimension… but information technology shouldn't be. The Bible is very articulate on this subject. Let's ignore for a moment silly arguments nigh Constantine, or discussions virtually the new covenant, and focus on God'south purpose for the original sabbath.
Get-go in Genesis
The start mention of the original sabbath is in Genesis 2:2-3:
By the 7th day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the 7th 24-hour interval he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the 7th solar day and fabricated information technology holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
The word "sabbath" is mostly translated as "rest." This is a source of some defoliation, as many don't realize that the word only means to finish. This isn't the kind of residuum we need after a expert conditioning. It's more like a musical rest, where no notes are played. The word literally means 'to cease.' God didn't rest on the 7th twenty-four hours considering He was tired. God doesn't get tired. God had finished creating the world, and then He stopped. That'south what "sabbath" means.
Making the original sabbath holy?
In verse three we read that God made the seventh 24-hour interval holy, or "sanctified" it. This is also a source of some defoliation, as many don't know what the word ways. They assume that the word holy gives the twenty-four hour period some additional spiritual meaning.
It's not actually a religious word. In Hebrew, it's qāḏaš, and in Greek it's hagios. Information technology means to set up something autonomously for special employ. For example, many of us have special dishes that nosotros use only when we have visitors. Nosotros have sanctified them… that is, we have fix them apart from our regular dishes, using them only for a special purpose. Don't be dislocated: the dishes aren't special in a spiritual sense. They're merely chosen – set apart – to exist used in unlike ways than our regular dishes. The same word could be used for annihilation. For example, we may have fix aside some old clothes to wear while doing jobs that might go u.s. muddy. Those are also sanctified, or set apart for a special purpose.
The Bible does use these words in a spiritual sense many times, of course. For example: Christians are called out of our quondam lives, set autonomously for God's use. That doesn't make Usa special, whatsoever more than painting while wearing a stained shirt makes the shirt special. The original sabbath isn't special on its own… it was simply gear up autonomously by God to be used in a specific way, for His own purposes.
Move to Exodus
After leading the ancient Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, God made a covenant with them. The terms of that covenant – known every bit the Torah – included a lot of religious activeness, including the cosmos of a tabernacle, sacrifices of animals, then on. Information technology also included taking a day off… that is, stopping. Sabbathing. The people were to cease their labor for a solar day. God pointed to His ain rest as an example for them, and told them that this sabbathing would be a sign of His covenant with them.
Now, remember: the sabbath isn't about being tired. The sabbath is about being finished with your work. The priests couldn't stop working the way that God did in Genesis. They offered the aforementioned sacrifices again and again, mean solar day later day, year after year. Why? Because their spiritual work wasn't finished. They were even forbidden to have chairs in the tabernacle considering sitting down would suggest that their work was done!
What was the goal?
Why would God practice this? As we see again and over again throughout both the Old and New Testaments, God promised to provide for His people. While they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years due to defiance, God provided manna and quail to sustain them. They weren't immune to get together extra nutrient, but only what they needed for that twenty-four hours. On the sixth twenty-four hours, they gathered twice equally much… then they had enough for the 7th day, when no manna or quail arrived. The sabbath pointed to God as provider. He wanted State of israel to trust Him. Even when they didn't, He all the same provided.
God'south provision in this style was temporary. They needed to trust God over and over. Why? Because the sabbath wasn't about taking a solar day off. Equally we see in the New Testament, the sabbath – a temporary, lesser thing – pointed to a greater and permanent affair.
Keep going to the New Attestation
The Exodus sabbath was a symbol of God's residual in Genesis. It told the children of Israel that they would someday be able to stop working… to stop sacrificing for their own sins. When Jesus died and rose once again, that 24-hour interval had finally come. In Hebrews 10:11-12 we encounter the comparison betwixt the Jewish priests and Jesus:
Day afterwards day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; once again and once again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never accept away sins. But when this priest [Jesus] had offered for all fourth dimension ane sacrifice for sins, he sat downwardly at the right hand of God.
Jesus finished His work and rested, just equally we see God doing in Genesis.
We see in Jesus' words the temporary nature of the original sabbath, and of the whole Torah. In John 4 Jesus offered living water to permanently quench our spiritual thirst. In John half-dozen Jesus pointed to the temporary nature of manna, which only satisfied hunger for a twenty-four hour period… then offered Himself equally the Bread of Life. Nosotros who come up to Jesus have been given eternal life, and our spiritual hunger is being satisfied by Jesus Himself.
What nearly u.s.?
How then should nosotros view the sabbath? God rested when His piece of work was done, and Jesus rested when His work was done. The ancient Jews never enjoyed that rest, but information technology'south available to us today, every bit Hebrews 4:9-10 tells u.s.a.:
In that location remains, and then, a sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's residue also rests from his own work, but equally God did from his.
Colossians 2:16-17 should erase any doubt about the nature of the sabbath:
Therefore do non let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath mean solar day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, yet, is found in Christ.
From all of these verses we can see that the sabbath clearly isn't a 24-hour interval of the week. It'south neither Saturday nor Sunday! Nosotros enter into the sabbath residual when nosotros finish working, and that simply happens when we accept that Jesus' sacrifice was for each of usa. His work is done, and He invites us to join Him.
Like the seventh mean solar day, those of usa who are in Christ have been set up apart. Look at Ephesians 2:8-10:
For it is past grace you lot have been saved, through religion – and this is not from yourselves, information technology is the gift of God – not by works, so that no 1 can boast. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to practise proficient works, which God prepared in advance for us to practise.
Decision
What was the purpose of the original sabbath? To point to Jesus… to His provision for our arable life, for our eternal life, and for our role in God's Kingdom. There's nothing special most the seventh day. What'due south special is that God has called to save us, and to transform usa to be similar Jesus. God'southward purpose in setting aside the seventh twenty-four hours has been fulfilled in Christ.
