What does it really mean to trust God?

I've been through the wringer when it comes to trusting people. Something tells me I'm not the only one.

It's interesting how our brains respond to things like trust and hurt. We trust until we've been hurt. Once we experience hurt, the way we manage ourselves and our relationships change. That change has a way of transferring into our relationship with God. Have you noticed that?

We begin to have reservations about trusting God because of the hurt we experience at the hands of other people. We trust Him with portions of our life but struggle to give Him our whole life. What's great about recognizing this is that at the same time we're realizing we aren't content with this back and forth in our faith lives. We want our relationship with God to be stronger than that. We know a firm relationship with God starts with trusting Him.

So then the question becomes, how do I trust God with all my heart?

How do you have faith in all circumstances?

How do you trust God when it looks impossible?

We'll answer those questions and more in the remainder of this article.

What Is Trusting In God?

The biggest problem with trust isn't how often it's broken, but how often it is misplaced. We have a tendency to place our trust and security in people and systems instead of on God. That gets us into a lot of trouble.

Instead of looking to God to provide and be our security, we burn ourselves out trying to earn more money.

Instead of looking to God for peace and contentment, we try to find it in possessions and material things.

When those things fail we find ourselves back at point A wondering how to trust God again

Trust is "the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something." It goes hand and hand with faith. A lot of people look for tangible things for us to put our trust in (people or possessions) because it's hard to believe in the strength and sovereignty of something you can't see. The Christian life requires us to do just that. Trust in God is the firm belief that God is reliable, His words are true, He is able, and His strength is sufficient.

How to trust God more starts with an understanding of those core truths. Many of us have the head-knowledge, but we don't grow in faith because we don't put our beliefs to work. We have to learn to push fear to the side and step out in real faith so that we can learn how to trust God for everything – instead of being dependent on things that waiver.

Trusting God In All Circumstances

What does the Bible say about trusting God in hard times? It's easy to trust when life is going well and we perceive that things are working in our favor. What about when life gets hard? This is often when we find ourselves questioning the faithfulness of God.

We equate His faithfulness with an adversity-free life. When hard times hit we see it as evidence of God's lack of presence and sovereignty in our life.

If this is where you're at, I want you to ask yourself this question.

Are you trusting God to produce His will in your life? Or are you trusting God to produce your desires for your life?

Trusting the Lord means being at peace with His will for you even if it isn't pretty. We are His vessels, and whatever He chooses to produce in us is for His purpose and the good of His Kingdom. This quick list of Bible characters who trusted God (and their stories) will show you what I mean.

The outcomes and circumstances of our lives will always vary. We see this first hand when we examine the lives of who trust God in the Bible.

How to Learn to Trust God?

How do we trust God in difficult times? Maybe you're like me, you've been through the wringer when it comes to trusting people and it's impacted your relationship with God and you're struggling with how to trust God again. I can't offer you a formula, but I can offer you a starting place. These three tips will guide you in the first steps of how to trust God fully.

  1. Keeping our eyes on God and what He is working (Colossians 3:2).
  2. Keeping His Words, the Bible, in our hearts (Psalm 19:14).
  3. Remind yourself of who God is (Psalm 77:11). This is the best way to develop trust in God, but it hinges on our willingness to stay close to Him and study His words. God reveals His nature and character to us throughout the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation He is faithful. Reminding yourself of that will help you build your faith and trust in God even in those seasons when life seems less than enjoyable.

If this feel impossible, start with just one step of faith at a time. Write down the situations you're leaving in His hands and journal as He leads you through them. Over time you'll begin to see and discern God at work in your life. The more you surrender to Him and the more faithful He shows Himself to be, the more confident you'll become in him and the less you'll wonder how to trust God for everything.

How do you know if you're really trusting God? You'll experience His peace. Even if you don't see where your situation is going or you don't have all the answers; even when His instruction doesn't make sense; You know that God does. Because God is faithful, you are content. That's how you know that you are trusting God.

8 Reasons to Trust In God

Although trusting God's will doesn't always mean things will go our way, it is still a fruitful discipline. Why should we trust God? What do we get out of it? Below is a collection of reason and benefits of trusting in God .

  1. He's always been faithful. God has a pretty good track record when it comes to keeping His promises.
  2. God sees what we can't. Nothing is hidden from God. He sees the outcome far before we are in the challenge. He sees our hearts, our intents, our thoughts. He knows our moves before we make them. Which makes Him PERFECT for the task of ordering our steps.
  3. He moves with eternity and covenant in mind. Sometimes the hard things we go through are the very things that bring the lost to Jesus. Sometimes that's how God sets us up to witness to those who need Him most.
  4. It's in His nature to redeem.
  5. God is motivated by His love for us. Everything that God has brought us through is because He loves us. Correction, conviction, sanctification, trials, and tribulations; though hard, these are the very methods He uses to refine us and bring us nearer to Him. He acts BECAUSE He loves us and wants to prepare us for eternity with Him.
  6. He is the source of all wisdom and life.
  7. Nothing is too hard for Him.
  8. His ways are perfect. God doesn't make mistakes. When He makes a decision and walks us through the valley, its because He has determined that is the path that will bear the fruit He intends to produce in us.

I've heard it said, "those who leave everything in God's hands will eventually see God's hand in everything." If you're looking for the benefits of God, make that number one on your list. Trusting in the Lord doesn't mean we don't face hardships. It does, however, offer the perspective, peace, and strength we need to get through uncertain times. This is why you must trust God.

How do you trust God when everything is going wrong: Step into the provision that comes with surrendering your circumstances to Him.
