Can I Run Call of Duty Black Ops 3
We now have a name for this year's Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The new title from alternating development house Treyarch looks to expand on the foundation laid by last year's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. Bigger jumps, better tech, and a growing distance from reality and modern warfare.
Another big change this year is Black Ops III is only coming to PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. That means Treyarch has less to worry about in regards to handling older platforms. As a benefit of the smaller platform focus, Treyarch and Activision are already releasing the PC minimum system requirements for the game.
Here's the nitty-gritty, care of our family over at Eurogamer:
- Operating System: Windows 7 64-Bit / Windows 8 64-Bit / Windows 8.1 64-Bit
- Processor: Intel Core i3-530 @ 2.93 GHz / AMD Phenom II X4 810 @ 2.60 GHz
- Memory: 6 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 @ 1GB / ATI Radeon HD 6970 @ 1GB
- DirectX: Version 11
- Network: Broadband Internet connection
- Sound Card: DirectX Compatible
It's worth noting that these are largely the same minimum specifications as Advanced Warfare. Processor and memory requirements are exactly the same and the graphics cards requirement got a bump upward. GeForce GTX 470 vs GTS 450 and Radeon HD 6970 vs Radeon HD 5870. We're talking about cards the debuted in 2009-2010, against cards either from the same generation or a generation later. Either way, these requirements shouldn't be hard for most enthusiast PC builds.
Treyarch has yet to release the recommended system specifications for Black Ops III, but we can at least surmise a ballpark. Black Ops III and Advanced Warfare's minimum specifications are very, very close, right? Well here's the recommended specs for Advanced Warfare.
- OS: Windows 7 64-Bit / Windows 8 64-Bit / Windows 8.1 64-Bit
- Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3.30GHz
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 @ 4GB
- DirectX: Version 11
- Network: Broadband Internet connection
- Hard Drive: 55 GB available space
- Sound Card: 100% DirectX 9.0c Compatible 16-bit
The GTX 760 is one of Nvidia's mid-range cards from the 2013 lineup. If you have one, stick with it as it's a great card. You won't be finding many these days at a reasonable price, but there's no need to look if you're buying new. Instead, you're much better off picking up one of last year's Nvidia offerings: the GTX 960. You'll get slightly better performance than the 760 in most cases. The 960 is currently available for $240 in the 4GB models and many models offer a free copy of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt for your trouble. (If that offer has already passed for you, that's not on me!) You may also be able to find some straggling GTX 770 cards online for a few dollars more; they'll outperform the 960, but they're on the way out, so finding one may be difficult.
There's no AMD Radeon for Advanced Warfare's recommended specifications, but the R9 280X will outperform the 960 with no issues. In fact, you'll find better performance at higher resolutions in many cases with the 280X over the 770 and the 960. You can find the R9 280X online for $220-260, so if you're a dealhunter, it's a great card. One caveat here is AMD's next series of graphics cards is coming this year. In fact, some R9 300 series cards are expected this Summer at the latest. So it's possible that picking up a AMD Radeon card right now is a bad idea, especially if we're talking about doing so for Black Ops III, which comes out in November.
So that where we stand when it comes to recommended specs. Once we get official recommendations from Activision and Treyarch, we'll update the story.

Third-person action-adventure games are his personal poison: Uncharted, Infamous, and Assassin's Creed just to name a few. If you see him around a convention, he's not hard to spot: Black guy, glasses, and a tie.
